2nd Annual Tri-State Taste of Barley

PLATTEVILLE, WI – The second annual Tri-State Taste of Barley event took place on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at the Platteville Convention Center. This event is sponsored by the Platteville Area Chamber of Commerce and the American Breweriana Association (ABA) and benefits the Chamber and the National Brewery Museum & Library located in the Potosi Brewery complex in Potosi, WI.

Organizer, John Dutcher, is proud of the type of event that has evolved. “We are touting the history of the breweries in the tri-state area as well as raising awareness of the importance of the ABA’s establishing their National Brewery Museum in Potosi. There are thousands of Breweriana collectors throughout the world and to have the National Brewery Museum right here in our back yard is extremely noteworthy”. Thousands of visitors have been through the Museum since it opened in June of 2008.

This event included tasting of over 60 craft brews from microbreweries throughout the area, including a number of home brewers. Representatives of the breweries were present to discuss their specific beers and a home-brewer demonstration was also displayed. Entertainment was provided by the Americana Band from Dubuque and Ralph Kluseman, who also served as Master of Ceremonies.

An added feature this year was cheese tasting. Local cheese factories that were represented were Gile Cheese, LLC, Cuba City; Roelli Cheese Haus, Shullsburg; Lactalis Cheese Factory, Belmont; and Mexican Cheese Product, Inc., Darlington. Six additional cheeses were available, including limburger, from the Monroe area. Fern Reinstein of JAS Candies, supplied homemade chocolates which were enjoyed by many.

A highlight of the event was the Taster’s Choice trophies where every attendee has the opportunity to vote for their favorite brew. This year’s first-place award was presented to the Potosi Brewery for their Cave Ale. Second place was a three-way tie (separated from first place by only one vote) given to Sand Creek Brewery for their Hard Lemonade, Capital Brewery for their Supper Club and Old Man River Brewery for their Enfach Helles. Third place was presented to Pyramid Brewery for their Fling. Plans are already being made for next year’s event.

Membership to the American Breweriana Association is $25/year .
